MAKES 24 SOFT SHELL TORTILLAS

With this recipe, you’ll be able to ditch the store-bought tortillas for good! You’ll be amazed by the gooey deliciousness a fresh tortilla brings to the table (pun intended). And with only four ingredients you probably already have at home, what’s stopping you? These are a true game-changer!

What you’ll need:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 2/3 cups hot water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

INSTRUCTIONS

Pro Tip: use a sandwich bag so the dough does not stick to your tortilla press.
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  2. Add the hot water and vegetable oil, and mix with your hands until the liquid has been incorporated (the dough should feel similar to Play-Doh at this point).
  3. Transfer the dough onto a clean, flat surface and knead about 15-20 times until dough becomes smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into 24 balls and set aside.
  5. Heat a large nonstick pan over medium heat.
  6. While the pan is heating, flatten the dough balls into tortillas. A tortilla press works best, although you can get creative and use a kitchen canister or box if needed. PRO TIP: cut the sides of a sandwich-size Ziploc bag so only the bottom is attached. Place the bag on the bottom plate of your tortilla press (or on a flat surface if you’re using a makeshift press). Flap the sandwich bag open to place a dough ball inside, then fold the bag to cover the top of the dough. The dough should be placed slightly off-center toward the hinge in the tortilla press. Close the top plate and press down to flatten the dough.
  7. Place the pressed tortilla directly on the hot pan. Cook about 1 minute, then flip and cook an additional 30 seconds.
  8. Voila! There you have it – delicious, preservative-free tortillas!

A few things I learned after making this recipe for the first time:

  • The flattened dough starts shrinking when you remove it from the press, so I recommend transferring it immediately to the hot pan.
  • These tortillas are slightly thicker than a typical store-bought soft taco shell. If you want a thinner tortilla, you can divide the dough into smaller portions.
  • The sandwich bag trick is a must! It makes cleanup so easy!!
  • Some recipes recommend dropping the dough in flour before cooking – I tried that initially and found it was unnecessary, and had better success without the excess flour.

I hope you enjoy making these as much as I do! Drop your feedback in the comments below!
